Full disclosure I'm not a Marvel reader, I'm not familiar with Mile's origin story, and I've never seen Into the Spiderverse。 Though I do remember when Marvel was originally launching this character。 So I came in as a new reader getting an intro to this comic from this graphic novel。 I liked how just enough info about Miles was given at the intro to establish who he is and what kinds of powers he has。This story really combined everything you expect from comic heroes while also involving real lif Full disclosure I'm not a Marvel reader, I'm not familiar with Mile's origin story, and I've never seen Into the Spiderverse。 Though I do remember when Marvel was originally launching this character。 So I came in as a new reader getting an intro to this comic from this graphic novel。 I liked how just enough info about Miles was given at the intro to establish who he is and what kinds of powers he has。This story really combined everything you expect from comic heroes while also involving real life events like the earthquakes Puerto Rico was hit with。 Mile's has family on the island as his mother grew up there and she's fundraising to send aid。 Miles is so pre-occupied with balancing school and being a hero that's he's really neglecting his family life。 So this story is really about him finding that balance between being Spider-Man and spending time with family and friends。The arc I received from Scholastic starts off fully illustrated in color, then it switches to Black and white, and then it's rougher sketches。 So I did get a preview of what the art would be like and it's vibrant and beautiful。I think this easy to read graphic novel format will be good for reluctant readers especially young Black readers who will be happy to see someone who looks like them on the pages of a book。 。。。more

FINISHED: loved this! It’s got charm, humour and Miles (superhero and a teenager all rolled into one)! What happens when a man goes missing and a strange rock appears along with girls with superpowers? Well it’s Miles’ job to figure it out。。。 and still be a good son and friend! I don’t envy his job mind - it’s hard enough just being a teenager, never mind Spider-Man too! I thought the artwork in this was exceptional!

Miles Morales is a Brooklyn middle schooler who also happens to be Spider-Man。 He is not to be confused with the older, more experienced Spider-Man from Queens, although they are pals。 And he has some unique powers – he can go invisible and stun bad guys with a blast of venom。 Bad news hits close to home when earthquakes hit Puerto Rico, where his Mom is from。 Miles helps to organize a fundraiser for those affected by the quake, and while he is handing out flyers, he meets a new student, Kyle。 W Miles Morales is a Brooklyn middle schooler who also happens to be Spider-Man。 He is not to be confused with the older, more experienced Spider-Man from Queens, although they are pals。 And he has some unique powers – he can go invisible and stun bad guys with a blast of venom。 Bad news hits close to home when earthquakes hit Puerto Rico, where his Mom is from。 Miles helps to organize a fundraiser for those affected by the quake, and while he is handing out flyers, he meets a new student, Kyle。 When Kyles’ father goes missing at the same time as earthquakes continue in Puerto Rico AND two mysterious superhero types keep appearing around Serval Industries, where Kyles’s father works, Miles has to go into overdrive to keep up with everything – school, family, the fundraiser, and helping find Kyle’s Dad。 It’s funny to see a superhero trying to find time to sleep。It’s also refreshing to see a young Black superhero, who is aided and abetted by his bestie, Ganke, who’s Korean American。 Ganke is the stay-at-home tech genius behind Miles’s acrobatic antics。 I like that a real life disaster is featured, tying super hero activism to a humanitarian cause。 The story is fast moving, full of action and has lots of satisfying spidey-stuff。The art warmly depicts an urban setting, using white gutters between panels in lots of different shapes, giving it a modern, fun, young feel。Plot changes are many and abrupt, and no character besides Miles has any depth。 For super hero fans, however, this may not make a difference。 。。。more

Disclaimer: My review for this book is based on an ARC sent to my workplace by Scholastic; all the following opinions I express are wholly my own。Drop-dead gorgeous illustrations and colours, plenty of fun little nods to other characters and aspects of the Marvel universe that had me grinning。I think fans who are expecting a full reentry into the Spiderverse world may be disappointed, but honestly I loved the movie so much that even a little sojourn back into this universe is enjoyable to me Disclaimer: My review for this book is based on an ARC sent to my workplace by Scholastic; all the following opinions I express are wholly my own。Drop-dead gorgeous illustrations and colours, plenty of fun little nods to other characters and aspects of the Marvel universe that had me grinning。I think fans who are expecting a full reentry into the Spiderverse world may be disappointed, but honestly I loved the movie so much that even a little sojourn back into this universe is enjoyable to me。 Given the fact that author Justin A。 Reynolds wrote this, I was expecting more of a social justice skew to the story, but it's really all about Miles adjusting to being Spiderman, exploring his talent for art, and helping his mom with a fundraiser for Puerto Rico。Story-wise, Miles Morales: Shock Waves could've been better, but I'm glad I read it and got to return to Miles's world- plus the art was superb! You don't necessarily need to be a Marvel fan to read it, but there's a few easter eggs to enjoy if you are。 。。。more

This awesome MG graphic novel features one of my favorite characters of all time: Mile Morales。 A huge reason why I love him so much is because of the Jason Reynolds version。 The fact that Justin A。 Reynolds is worked on this version makes it that much better for graphic novels。 The artwork was beautiful! It’s perfect for middle grade readers too! The story is strong and tests Miles’ sense of self and character。 Thank you Edelweiss for a copy。 Grab yours June 1!

Two successive disastrous earthquakes strike Puerto Rico。 Miles Morales, a teen who juggles between his life as a student and Spiderman, sets up a fundraiser to support the victims。 When the fundraiser is at its peak his new friend's father mysteriously disappears and two mysterious girls seem to have acquired superpowers。 Later, everything seems to connect。The plot was as good as any other marvel ones。 Especially liked the choice of a superhero which the readers can relate to。 The illustrations Two successive disastrous earthquakes strike Puerto Rico。 Miles Morales, a teen who juggles between his life as a student and Spiderman, sets up a fundraiser to support the victims。 When the fundraiser is at its peak his new friend's father mysteriously disappears and two mysterious girls seem to have acquired superpowers。 Later, everything seems to connect。The plot was as good as any other marvel ones。 Especially liked the choice of a superhero which the readers can relate to。 The illustrations were vibrant and motivate the reader to read on。 Can't wait for the book to hit the stores and similar books to follow。 。。。more

And will he ever get his art project to work out the way he wants it?Strengths: The idea of a tween super hero is a fun one-- all of the angst PLUS super powers! The events in Miles life-- going to a boarding school for art, dealing with a roommate, and struggling to help his parents in the wake of the hurricane in their homeland-- are all fascinating by themselves, and adding a mystery about Kyle's father and fights with his nemeses just makes it even better。 Ms。 Marvel and Squirrel Girl make cameo appearances。 I wish I could remember if the plot is connected to the Jason Reynolds book, but I don't think it is。 A short, fun read about a popular super hero!Weaknesses: Not only was I generally confused about Miles' activity (why does everyone seem to know that he's Spider Man?), since I am not well-versed in his backstory, but the E ARC of the graphic novel made it hard to highlight key plot points。 I feel like I am just not doing this book justice。 What I really think: I wasn't sure that the novel version would circulate, but it does。 I'm not sure why fans wouldn't just pick up the comic book versions of this story (since I do not understand the publication schedule of those at all), but this is a good way for libraries to stock the story, and would be a good introduction to Miles for readers who might be unaware of his story or who have only seen the movies。 This is available in hardcover, prebind, and paperback from Follett。 。。。more

ARC provided by publisher。 All thoughts and opinions my own。We don't talk enough about just how good "Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse" was。 It introduced an Afro-Carribean Gen Z'er who was busy trying to balance school and being a superhero。 Thankfully, no much has changed in Miles Morales: Shock Waves and we get to check in on Miles who is flying around Brooklyn still fighting crime。Miles Morales: Shock Waves picks up with Miles struggling to balance his secret life as a superhero and as a stu ARC provided by publisher。 All thoughts and opinions my own。We don't talk enough about just how good "Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse" was。 It introduced an Afro-Carribean Gen Z'er who was busy trying to balance school and being a superhero。 Thankfully, no much has changed in Miles Morales: Shock Waves and we get to check in on Miles who is flying around Brooklyn still fighting crime。Miles Morales: Shock Waves picks up with Miles struggling to balance his secret life as a superhero and as a student at Brooklyn Visions Academy。 A massive earthquake hits Puerto Rico, affecting Myles' mother's homeland and Miles is determined to host a fundraiser to raise money for the island。 Miles meets a new student Kyle whose father goes missing, just as Spiderman gets mixed up with two female bandits。 Miles and Kyle eventually team up to track down her father leading them directly into the path of a villain who seems to be creating super soldiers in his lab。Miles Morales: Shock Waves sticks close to the aspects of Miles that I loved in the film, his desire to be a successful superhero, his love for his family and his ambition to finish school。 Always looming overhead is Miles' struggle to balance everything, and often times the people around Miles just think he is distracted but in reality he's exhausted by his crime fighting during the night。 The banter between between Miles and his friends especially Ganke Lee is silly and I appreciated the few fun cameo's that I won't spoil。Shock Waves carries forward a really important aspect of New York and Miles' world: diversity。 I personally like seeing Brown characters and feel like this was a good snapshot of just how diverse Brooklyn is。 Vibrant colors, a fast paced plot and familiar characters make this a must read graphic novel for Marvel fans of all ages! 。。。more

You're in for some grand adventures, deep belly laughs, and lots of inspiration! 。。。more

The newest installment of Miles Morales gets an A+。 Justin Reynolds weaves in Myles’ Puerto Rican heritage and its recent ecological disaster。 The action stays upbeat while the addition of other Marvel characters bring humor。 The illustrations lean into bold primary colors giving this installment a traditional Marvel look。 It’s perfect for middle grade and anyone else interested in the Brooklyn Spiderman。

The plot is a bit simplistic, and the moral (balancing relationships and other responsibilities) needed more fleshing out。 The characters are diverse and well-written and I was glad to see cameos of Kamala/Ms。 Marvel and Doreen/Squirrel Girl。 The art was unfortunately quite blurry in my advanced electronic copy, but seemed vibrant。 Shock Waves is a little boring, but a decent story overall, especially for younger readers。 2。5 starsThank you so much to the publisher for providing me with this eAR The plot is a bit simplistic, and the moral (balancing relationships and other responsibilities) needed more fleshing out。 The characters are diverse and well-written and I was glad to see cameos of Kamala/Ms。 Marvel and Doreen/Squirrel Girl。 The art was unfortunately quite blurry in my advanced electronic copy, but seemed vibrant。 Shock Waves is a little boring, but a decent story overall, especially for younger readers。 2。5 starsThank you so much to the publisher for providing me with this eARC via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review! 。。。more
